Andrew Stacey
Andrew
was born in Vancouver, BC and from a very early age he has
been building and creating in 3D. It seems that one thing
led to another. Blocks progressed to Lego, to Mechano, to
model railroading, to woodwork, and now to metal sculpture
and functional art.
Although his creative talents were very strong, his mechanical
and technical aptitudes led him into a successful career in
mechanical engineering. After graduating as a Mechanical Design
Technologist, Andrew spent 11 years in the steel fabrication
and machine shop industry in British Columbia. Through this
career his creative talents came into play to solve many design
problems and technical challenges. The technical skills he
uses to create his fabulous sculptures were acquired on this
career path.
In
2001 his interests shifted from wood work to metal sculpture.
A passion emerged as his keen eye saw the artistic possibilities
in the chaos of steel scrap that was generated each day where
he worked. One day he looked in a scrap bin full of lathe
shavings and saw the noodles which formed the vision for 'Blue
Plate Special' which won 'Best in Show' at the TONAC juried
art show in Peachland, BC in March, 2002. Due to this success,
he accompanied the piece to the BC Festival of the Arts in
Surrey, BC in May of 2002, where it was displayed in the curated
show 'ARTworks' at the North Surrey Arena.
Over
four years Andrew worked very hard, completing over 50 sculptures
of various size and complexity, including several commissioned
works. One of these works is the 7-ft tall steel gargoyle
named 'Bob'. Bob created quite a stir while on display in
downtown Kelowna, BC, and has now found a permanent home at
a private residence in Calgary, Alberta.
Andrew
was a member of the Kelowna and District Arts Council, The
Calgary Point of Art Society, Metalphoric Association of Metal
Artists and is now a member of the Revelstoke Visual Arts
Society. In 2002, he participated as a non-commissioned sculptor
in the Okanagan Thompson International Sculpture Symposium
and was accepted into the Lake Country 'Artwalk 2002', a juried
show in September 2002, where he was voted in the top ten
for People's Choice. Andrew also served on The Calgary Point
of Art Society board of directors and served on the board
for ArtWalk 2004 in Calgary, AB.
After
attempting to make a career out of his creativity in Calgary
Alberta, Andrew signed on with CP Rail in order to pay the
bills and this lead him to transfer to Revelstoke BC. Although
taking some time away from art to establish a new career as
a railroader Andrew has been busy dreaming up new and interesting
works. Now at home in the mountains Andrew is busy re-establishing
his artistic base in Revelstoke BC with several contributions
to members shows in 2007 and 2008 at the Revelstoke Visual
Arts Center. And now, in 2009, he has presented his show 'Inspiration
Revealed' in the main gallery at the Revelstoke Visual Arts
Center.
